UCD record surge in interest in cybersecurity courses following HSE breach

Following last month’s bombshell ransomware attack on the HSE, an increase in interest has been recorded in courses related to cybersecurity.

University College Dublin’s (UCD) Professional Academy has noted a more than 10% increase in interest in their cybersecurity diploma courses, as people realise that cybersecurity is everyone’s problem.

Coming from a diverse range of industries — including financial services, transportation, utilities, and software to list a few — workers are upskilling to avoid a breach like that which the HSE experienced in recent weeks.

Following last month’s bombshell ransomware attack on the HSE, an increase in interest has been recorded in courses related to cybersecurity.

Managing Director of UCD Professional Academy Aaron McKenna told Extra.ie the school had experienced ‘a 10% increase in our Cybersecurity interest, a far greater growth than all the other professional courses we offer.’

Of those enrolling, UCD have noted that there is a particular intrerest from people with management backgrounds ‘who are trying to get to grips with the requirements of their groups or smaller businesses,’ and IT professionals ‘who are being asked to bring solutions to the table within their organisations.’

‘UCD Professional Academy helps close this gap by offering quality, accessible courses in Cybersecurity and Ethical Hacking. I expect the increase in applications to be similar in other colleges and this increased demand and interest in cybersecurity will help protect us all.’

Currently, UCD Professional Academy offer Professional Diplomas in both Cybersecurity and Ethical Hacking, with courses starting from July.
